Sozopol Car Hire Guide 2026: Old Town, Beaches & Best Drives
Why Sozopol Deserves a Car in 2026
Sozopol is Bulgaria’s oldest coastal town — 2,600 years of history, an Old Town of timber-framed houses perched on rocky headlands, and some of the Black Sea’s best beaches within a 20-minute drive. But here’s the thing: the best bits aren’t walkable from the centre. Harmanite Beach is a 15-minute walk. The St. Ivan Island boat tour leaves from the harbour, but getting to the remote beaches at Gradina and Zlatna Ribka requires wheels. And the Old Town’s medieval walls and wooden houses are worth the trip alone, but they’re just the start.
A hire car in Sozopol means you can hit three beaches before lunch, drive to the Ropotamo River nature reserve in the afternoon, and be back for sunset dinner overlooking the harbour. At €8–€20/day for a compact in summer 2026, it’s cheaper than relying on taxis and gives you the freedom this stretch of coast deserves.
Car Hire Prices in Sozopol — Summer 2026
Sozopol doesn’t have its own airport — you’ll pick up at Burgas Airport (BOJ), about 35 km away. Prices below are for summer peak (July–August 2026):
Compact (Dacia Sandero, Hyundai i10): €8–€18/day booked 4+ weeks ahead. Walk-up rates at Burgas in August can hit €25–€30/day.
Economy (VW Polo, Skoda Fabia): €12–€25/day. The sweet spot for couples — good boot space, air-con that actually works.
Mid-size SUV (Dacia Duster, Suzuki Vitara): €25–€45/day. Worth it if you’re exploring the dirt tracks around Ropotamo or the back roads to Gradina beach.
7-seater (VW Touran, Renault Grand Scenic): €40–€65/day. Book early — these vanish fast from Burgas Airport in July.
Delivery to Sozopol: Most major suppliers (Sixt, Europcar, Enterprise) offer hotel delivery in Sozopol for €15–€25. Worth it if you’re staying in the Old Town where parking is tight. Local operator AutoDiam delivers for free with 3+ day bookings.

Getting to Sozopol from Burgas Airport
The drive from Burgas Airport to Sozopol takes 35–40 minutes (35 km) via the E87 coastal road. It’s straightforward:
1. Exit the airport and follow signs for Sozopol/E87
2. The road runs along the coast — scenic and well-paved
3. You’ll pass through Chernomorets (worth a stop for the beach) before reaching Sozopol
4. Enter via the new town (new bridge) — the Old Town bridge has restricted access in summer
Taxi alternative: €25–€35 from the airport. The bus costs €3 but takes 50 minutes and drops you at the bus station on the edge of town.
Parking in Sozopol — The Real Challenge
Sozopol’s Old Town is a maze of cobblestone streets from the 18th century. It was not built for cars. Here’s how to park without losing your mind:
New Town (north of the harbour): Several paid car parks along the harbour road — €3–€5/day in summer. These fill by 10:30am in July and August. Arrive early or pay €8/day at the private lots near Harmanite Beach.
Old Town (south of the harbour): Almost impossible in summer. The narrow streets are pedestrian-only during peak hours (10am–8pm). There’s a small car park near the archaeological museum (€5/day, 30 spaces) that fills by 9am. Don’t even try the side streets — they’re one-way, cobblestone, and residents will block you in.
Harmanite Beach area: Paid parking along the beach road (€3–€4/hour, €10/day max). This is your best bet if you’re beach-hopping — central location, reasonable rates.
Free option: Street parking on the main road into town (about 800m from the Old Town). Legal and safe, but a 10-minute walk to the centre. Fine if you’re staying multiple days and only using the car for day trips.
5 Best Drives from Sozopol
1. Sozopol to Gradina Beach (8 km, 12 minutes)
Head south on the E87 and turn off at the Gradina camping sign. This is the locals’ beach — long sandy stretch, no sunbeds, a beach bar and nothing else. The road is partially unpaved for the last 2 km — take it slow in a compact. The beach has a shallow entry and clean water. Go before 11am on weekends.
2. Ropotamo River Nature Reserve (25 km, 30 minutes)
One of Bulgaria’s most dramatic natural areas. Drive south on the E87, turn off at the Ropotamo sign. The road takes you through dense forest to the river mouth — a place where the river meets the sea through a narrow channel between dramatic rock formations. There’s a free car park, walking trails, and boat trips (€5–€10). The ancient Thracian sanctuary of Beglik Tash is 5 km further — enormous rock formations used for rituals 3,000 years ago. Well worth the detour.
3. Sozopol to Primorsko (25 km, 25 minutes)
Primorsko is a family-friendly resort town with two bays — Northern and Southern. The Southern Bay (South Beach) has a Blue Flag, shallow water, and free parking right by the sand. Drive the E87 south and follow signs. The road is excellent and scenic, running along the coast with sea views.
4. Sozopol to Chernomorets Loop (10 km, 15 minutes)
Chernomorets is a quiet fishing village 10 minutes north on the coast road. It has three small beaches, a medieval fortress (Krimna), and a lovely promenade. Combine it with a stop at the beach at Camping Koral for a half-day circuit. The road is flat, well-paved, and suitable for any car.
5. Sozopol to Lozenets and Oasis Beach (30 km, 35 minutes)
Drive south through the Ropotamo reserve to Lozenets — a laid-back village popular with Bulgarian creatives and expats. The beach at Lozenets is wide and sandy, and the nearby Oasis Beach (2 km south) has a famous beach bar with DJ sets on summer weekends. The road is the E87 — fast and scenic.

Driving Rules for the Black Sea Coast
Speed limits: 50 km/h in towns (strictly enforced in Sozopol and Chernomorets with mobile cameras), 90 km/h on open roads. The E87 between Burgas and Sozopol has average speed cameras.
Drink driving: Bulgaria’s limit is 0.5‰ (about two small beers). For drivers with less than 1 year of experience, it’s zero. Fines start at €250 and go up fast.
Petrol: Expect €1.55–€1.70/litre for unleaded (бензин) in summer 2026. There’s a Shell station on the E87 just south of Burgas, and an EKO station on the road into Sozopol. Fill up in Burgas — it’s cheaper.
Vignette: You need a Bulgarian vignette (винетка) for motorways. The E87 to Sozopol is not a toll road, so you only need a vignette if you’re driving on the A1/A2 motorways elsewhere. A weekly vignette costs €8 and is available at border crossings and petrol stations.
Parking fines: €10–€25 for illegal parking. In Sozopol, the municipal police are active in summer and will clamp. Don’t park on yellow lines or block the Old Town access roads.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a car in Sozopol?
If you’re staying in the Old Town and only visiting Harmanite Beach, you can manage without one — everything is within a 20-minute walk. But if you want to explore the southern beaches (Gradina, Zlatna Ribka), the Ropotamo nature reserve, or day-trip to Primorsko and Lozenets, a car is essential. The bus network is limited and taxis add up fast.
Is it worth picking up the car at Burgas Airport vs Sozopol?
Almost always pick up at Burgas Airport. The selection is larger, prices are lower, and you skip the €15–€25 delivery fee. The 35-minute drive to Sozopol is easy and well-signposted. The only exception is if you’re arriving late at night and don’t want to navigate in the dark.
Can I drive from Sozopol to Sunny Beach?
Yes — it’s 30 km (30 minutes) via the E87 north. You’ll pass through Chernomorets. Sunny Beach has huge paid car parks (€5–€8/day) but they’re worth it for the convenience. For Sunny Beach car hire details, see our Sunny Beach guide.
What’s the road to Gradina Beach like?
The first 6 km from Sozopol is paved (good condition). The last 2 km is unpaved — gravel and sand. Any standard hire car can handle it at 20–30 km/h. After heavy rain, there can be puddles — drive slowly. The beach car park is free but has about 30 spaces.
Is parking really that difficult in Old Town Sozopol?
Yes, genuinely. The Old Town has about 30 public parking spaces for thousands of visitors. In July and August, they’re gone by 9am. Your best strategy: park in the New Town harbour car parks (€3–€5/day), walk the 5 minutes to the Old Town, and use the car only for day trips outside town.
Can I take a hire car from Burgas to Turkey?
Most major suppliers (Sixt, Europcar, Enterprise) allow cross-border travel to Turkey with 48 hours’ notice and a surcharge of €30–€60. Local operators often don’t allow it. Check the terms carefully before booking. The border crossing at Kapikule is 90 minutes from Sozopol via the E87 and A2.
