Car Hire Sofia Airport — Your Complete Guide to Renting a Car at Bulgaria’s Busiest Airport

Why Sofia Airport is the Gateway to Bulgaria

Sofia Airport (SOF) handles over 7 million passengers a year — making it by far the busiest airport in Bulgaria. If you’re flying into the country, there’s a good chance you’ll land here. And if you want to see anything beyond the capital, renting a car at Sofia Airport is smart. Public transport in Bulgaria works, but it’s slow. Trains connect major cities, but the network is limited. Buses go everywhere, but take forever. A car gives you freedom to explore at your own pace.

The airport sits 10km east of Sofia city centre, just off the A6 motorway. From here, you can be in the mountains in 30 minutes, at a monastery in an hour, or at the Black Sea coast in 5 hours. This page covers everything you need to know about car hire at Sofia Airport — from picking up your keys to driving in Bulgaria.

Terminal 1 vs Terminal 2: Where to Pick Up Your Car

Sofia Airport has two terminals, and they’re not connected airside. You need to know which one you’re arriving at.

Terminal 1 (The Old Terminal)

Terminal 1 handles domestic flights and some regional routes. It’s smaller, older, and a bit chaotic. The car hire desks are in the arrivals hall — just walk out of baggage claim and you’ll see them. Companies operating here include:

  • Top Rent-A-Car (local, reliable, good prices)
  • Sixt
  • Enterprise
  • Avis

If you’ve booked with a company that doesn’t have a desk in T1, they’ll usually meet you in arrivals or provide a shuttle to their off-site lot.

Terminal 2 (The Main International Terminal)

Terminal 2 is where most international flights land — airlines like Lufthansa, British Airways, Ryanair, Wizz Air, and Qatar Airways. It’s modern, spacious, and easier to navigate. The car hire desks are on the ground floor of arrivals, clearly signed. You’ll find:

  • Top Rent-A-Car (Bulgaria’s biggest local company)
  • Sixt
  • Europcar
  • Enterprise
  • Budget
  • Hertz

Walking between terminals takes about 20 minutes if you arrive at the wrong one. There’s a free shuttle bus, but it runs every 30 minutes and walking is often faster. The path is paved and signposted — just head outside T1 and walk right, following the road around.

Best Time to Pick Up (Avoid the Queues)

Sofia Airport gets busy between 7am and 9am, when multiple flights from across Europe land within a short window. If you can, avoid booking a car pickup before 9:30am. The queues at this time can be 30-45 minutes, and the staff are rushed.

The sweet spot is late morning (10am-12pm) or early afternoon. Afternoon arrivals (2pm-6pm) are also manageable, though flights from the Middle East often land in the evening.

If you do arrive during the morning rush, have your booking confirmation, driving licence, and credit card ready. The paperwork in Bulgaria can be slow — they’ll want your passport details, local address (your hotel is fine), and a signature on multiple forms.

Driving From Sofia Airport to the City Centre

The drive from Sofia Airport to the city centre takes 20-30 minutes, depending on traffic. It’s straightforward:

  1. Exit the airport and head west on Boulevard Bruxelles
  2. Join Tsarigradsko Shose (the main arterial road into Sofia)
  3. Follow signs for the centre (Centrum)

Traffic is heavy during rush hour (7:30-9:30am and 5-7pm). Outside those times, it’s a quick 10km drive.

Parking in Sofia: The city centre uses a paid parking zone (Blue Zone) Monday to Saturday, 8am-7pm. It costs 2-3 BGN per hour. Most hotels have parking — ask when you book. Street parking outside the centre is often free but harder to find.

Bulgaria Driving Essentials

Vignette (Road Tax)

You need a vignette sticker to drive on Bulgarian motorways. There are no toll booths — it’s all electronic via vignette. You can buy one at:

  • Petrol stations near the airport (ask the car hire staff where)
  • Online at bgtoll.bg (e-toll)
  • Most large petrol stations throughout Bulgaria

Prices (2024): 15 BGN for a week, 30 BGN for a month. The fine for driving without one is steep — 300+ BGN.

Speed Limits

  • 50 km/h in cities and towns
  • 90 km/h on rural roads
  • 130 km/h on motorways (only with a vignette)

Speed cameras are common on motorways and entering villages. The police also do random checks.

Other Rules

  • Headlights must be on at all times, even during the day
  • Blood alcohol limit is 0.5‰ (about one small beer) — but best to avoid any alcohol if driving
  • Winter tyres are mandatory from November 15 to March 1
  • Keep your rental agreement and insurance docs in the car

Day Trips From Sofia by Car

Rila Monastery (73km south)

The most famous monastery in Bulgaria and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The drive takes about 90 minutes through the Rila Mountains. The road is good quality, winding but well-maintained. Plan for a half-day — the monastery is stunning, and there’s a decent restaurant nearby. Tip: Go early morning or late afternoon to avoid the tour bus crowds from Sofia.

Vitosha Mountain

Only 30 minutes from the airport, Vitosha is Sofia’s backyard mountain. You can drive up to Aleko Hut (about 1800m elevation) in summer and autumn. In winter, the road may be closed due to snow. Great for hiking with panoramic views of Sofia.

Plovdiv (140km southeast)

Bulgaria’s second city and one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Europe. The drive takes 1.5-2 hours via the A1 Trakia Motorway (very good road). Plovdiv’s Old Town is beautiful, the Roman amphitheatre is impressive, and the food scene is better than Sofia. Worth a full day trip or even an overnight stay.
