Car Hire Bourgas Airport — Your Gateway to Sunny Beach and the Southern Black Sea

Bourgas Airport: The Sunny Beach Gateway

Bourgas Airport (BOJ) is the primary airport for Bulgaria’s southern Black Sea coast. If you’re heading to Sunny Beach, Nessebar, or Sozopol, this is your airport. It’s smaller than Sofia and more seasonal — most flights operate from May to October, with July and August being the peak months.

The airport sits 10km north of Bourgas city, roughly 35km from Sunny Beach. renting a car at Bourgos Airport gives you freedom to explore beyond the resorts — the ancient town of Nessebar, the quieter beaches of Sozopol, and even the wild Strandzha mountains inland.

Car Hire at Bourgas Airport: What to Expect

Bourgas Airport has a single terminal. After baggage claim, the car hire desks are in the arrivals hall — you can’t miss them. The setup is simple and quick compared to larger European airports.

Companies operating here include:

  • Top Rent-A-Car (reliable local company, good prices)
  • Sixt
  • Europcar
  • Enterprise
  • Avis
  • Budget

Warning: In July and August, queues can be 30-45 minutes during peak arrival times (typically late afternoon when charter flights from UK, Germany, and Scandinavia land). Book early and have your documents ready. The small terminal fills up fast.

Driving From Bourgas Airport

To Sunny Beach (35km north)

Take the coastal road north. The drive takes about 40 minutes in normal traffic, but allow longer in July-August when the road gets busy. Sunny Beach is Bulgaria’s largest resort — 8km of sandy beach, massive hotels, nightlife that goes until dawn. It’s popular with young tourists from across Europe. Not for travellers seeking peace and quiet.

To Nessebar (30km north)

Nessebar Old Town is a must-visit. A UNESCO World Heritage Site on a small peninsula, with cobblestone streets, ancient Byzantine churches, and seafood restaurants overlooking the Black Sea. The drive takes 35-40 minutes. Park outside the Old Town (car access is restricted) and walk in. Go early morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat and crowds. The sunset view from Nessebar’s western side is exceptional.

To Sozopol (30km south)

Sozopol is quieter and more authentic than Sunny Beach. The old town has traditional wooden houses, narrow lanes, and a genuine Bulgarian feel. The beaches are good, and the seafood is better than up north. The drive from Bourgas Airport takes about 35 minutes via the coastal road. If you want a Bulgarian Black Sea experience without the package-tour feel, Sozopol is the place.

Bourgas City Itself

Most tourists skip Bourgas city and head straight to the resorts. Honestly, that’s fair — Bourgas is a working port city, not a tourist destination. It has decent restaurants and shops, but there’s not much to see. The sea garden (morska gradina) is a pleasant walk. If you’re waiting for a flight or need supplies, Bourgas is fine. Otherwise, spend your time in Nessebar or Sozopol.

Beyond the Beaches: Strandzha Nature Park

Here’s something most tourists never see. Strandzha Nature Park is the largest protected area in Bulgaria, located about 40km south of Bourgas. It’s wild, mountainous, and sparsely populated. Traditional villages, ancient forests, and rare wildlife. The drive inland is scenic but the roads are rough in places.

If you want to explore Strandzha properly, consider hiring a 4×4 or a car with higher ground clearance. The main roads to the villages of Kosti, Brushlyan, and Malko Tarnovo are paved, but secondary roads can be challenging. Most rental cars in Bulgaria are small hatchbacks — fine for coastal driving, not ideal for mountain tracks.

Highlights of Strandzha:

  • Malko Tarnovo — a small town right on the Turkish border
  • Brushlyan village — traditional Strandzha architecture
  • Veleka River — one of the cleanest rivers in Europe
  • Fire-dancing rituals (nestinarstvo) — pagan tradition still practiced in some villages

What Car Should You Hire?

For most travellers heading to Sunny Beach, Nessebar, or Sozopol, a small to medium car is perfectly fine. The coastal roads are good quality, distances are short, and parking is easier with a compact car.

Consider a larger car or 4WD if you:

  • Plan to explore Strandzha Nature Park inland
  • Are travelling with a family and luggage
  • Want to drive into the mountains further north

Fuel is cheaper than in Western Europe (about 2.20-2.40 BGN per litre for petrol in 2024). Most rental cars come with a manual transmission — automatics are available but cost more.

Seasonal Considerations

Bourgs Airport operates mainly from May to October. Charter flights from UK, Germany, Poland, Russia, and Scandinavia dominate in summer. The airport can be quiet or closed in winter.

If you’re visiting in:

  • May-June: Great weather, smaller crowds, lower prices. Some restaurants and attractions may not be fully open.
  • July-August: Peak season. Everything is open, but it’s crowded, hot (30-35°C), and more expensive. Book your car 4-6 weeks in advance.
  • September: The sweet spot. Warm weather (25-28°C), water is still swimmable, crowds are thinner, prices drop.
  • October: Quieter, but weather is unpredictable. Some resorts start closing down.
