The drive takes 35-40 minutes. Park outside the Old Town (car access is restricted) and walk in. Go early morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat and crowds. The sunset view from Nessebar’s western side is exceptional.
To Sozopol (30km south)
Sozopol is quieter and more authentic than Sunny Beach. The old town has traditional wooden houses, narrow lanes, and a genuine Bulgarian feel. The beaches are good, and the seafood is better than up north. The drive from Bourgas Airport takes about 35 minutes via the coastal road. If you want a Bulgarian Black Sea experience without the package-tour feel, Sozopol is the place.
Bourgas City Itself
Most tourists skip Bourgas city and head straight to the resorts. Honestly, that’s fair — Bourgas is a working port city, not a tourist destination. It has decent restaurants and shops, but there’s not much to see. The sea garden (morska gradina) is a pleasant walk. If you’re waiting for a flight or need supplies, Bourgas is fine. Otherwise, spend your time in Nessebar or Sozopol.
Beyond the Beaches: Strandzha Nature Park
Here’s something most tourists never see. Strandzha Nature Park is the largest protected area in Bulgaria, located about 40km south of Bourgas. It’s wild, mountainous, and sparsely populated. Traditional villages, ancient forests, and rare wildlife. The drive inland is scenic but the roads are rough in places.
If you want to explore Strandzha properly, consider hiring a 4×4 or a car with higher ground clearance. The main roads to the villages of Kosti, Brushlyan, and Malko Tarnovo are paved, but secondary roads can be challenging. Most rental cars in Bulgaria are small hatchbacks — fine for coastal driving, not ideal for mountain tracks.

- Want to drive into the mountains further north
